STATUS Of WORKING WOMEN IN OUR SOCIETY
Working women continues to face stiff challenges and social resistance even in 21st century. The women are permitted to work only out of necessity and out of their choice. When husband's work was not adequate to support their family, the wife also was compelled to work. They are faced with domestic violence sometimes by their fathers, husbands, are in-laws. The working women in urban areas are more vulnerable than in rural areas as they contribute a large portion in the family income which is sometimes clashed by male ego. The Nation Family Health Survey IT (1998) shows that working women in urban areas face more violence as compared to the rural counterparts, which may be because of their being economically active and relatively better informed about their rights. Men plays an independent role while women are dependent on them.
The working women find dual challenge of handling family and work pressure. Earlier women were only responsible for performing their domestic roles, but as the time changed and they became a part of the workforce, they are now hold responsible for performing both roles as a householder and as a professional worker. While managing work life balance they are over burdened with the work, if they give their optimum capacity their professional duties, they fail to perform their traditional roles.
WOMEN'S WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Family work balance means the women has power to er equilibrium the hours of personal and professional life. But sometimes some circumstances occur in Such a way that conflict will be occur either socially or professional side to balance family work life. "Work-life balance is an act of managing both work and family domain effectively" (G. Pradhan). A work-life balance is defined as satisfaction with fulfilling the personal goals in both the work and life domain by being able to use appropriate means (Clark 2000). As a result she withdrawals from her work due to simple reasons like taking care of her children aged in laws/parents and other family pressures. If the man is able to share some of her responsibilities, she would be successful woman. They bring up children; look after parents, relatives and friends; maintain households, take part in voluntary organisations and undertake civic duties. It is widely accepted that the lack of women in senior, corporate positions is due to conflict between family and carrier. Some women avoid promotion inorder to avoid the extra stress from balancing family and work.
However, as it can be seen, these studies are fairly outdated. Women who are successful in balancing their work and family life tend to redefine the structural and personal roles that have been assigned to them by the workplace and society. Where women learn to combine both roles by taking their children on business trips or occasionally taking their children to the office which allows the child to understand what their mother is doing while she is away from them. Also these women seem to understand that they do not have to do it all (e.g. housework, childcare and a career) and therefore outsource some of the work, for example they may hire a cleaning company or a nanny. Women's experience considerable pressure, in the morning before going out to work and after work, to do all that is necessary for the family. Even if a women has a high designation in her office, she is expected take care of all the family affairs almost single handedly. She is solely responsible in balancing her responsibilities in her multiple roles in domestic as well as professional life. The women should also educate her children to share responsibilities to make life better and fruitful.
IMPACT OF WORK-LIFE BALANCE ON THEM
Work-life balance becomes highly important to study what women undergo in their carrier path as they will be handling their family as well at the same time. The criteria which affects the working women such as excessive work lead, stree, insufficient time, work pressure is far more than others as a lot of time management etc factor influence the work-life balance among working women in society as well as family. It is critical for work and family research to fully understood the condition under which the working women experience conflict between their roles. Today, career for women is continuously challenged by the increasing demands at workplace. Majority of the working women are stretching themselves to discharge their roles at office and home and in the process experience WORK-LIFE imbalance which will have undesirable consequences for individuals in the form of increased levels of stress complaint, depression, Lowe mental, health, higher family conflicts, less life satisfaction etc.
Both personal and professional lives are important and working women stuggle to do justice for both the roles. According to Peters, Montgomery, Bakker and Schaufeli (2005) job and family demands are often irrconciable creating an imbalance between the two. Working womens were mainly confined to low profile or non-managerial position. Now, the time has changed and their presence is seen everywhere in different position in the workplace. Therefore, it is very much required to explore the impact of work-life balance on working women. Women always try to look for more self care time in an attempt to uncover new meaning in the workplace. Infact, women frequently commit to achieve balance between their career and life (Kriston, 2006). Women are facing lot of many challanges in their lives, as they are prone to manage professional as well as personal life. Which in result put emergence of analyzing work-life balance in the life of working women.
